One of the most beneficial parts of planning in advance is the excitement that it can build. Finding a spare moment for Jennifer and I to get away over the last few months has been somewhat like looking for a needle in a haystack, but when we've planned to have a date, it's always been something we both looked forward to all week.
I wonder what kind of excitement you could build in your family or marriage if you would take a moment to plan some moments that will strengthen and encourage the relationship you have with those you love the most? When we constantly fly by the seat of our pants, we miss out on the opportunity to truly get excited about an opportunity.
What about in your church? What if your key leaders and volunteers knew where the church was headed far enough in advance that they could build excitement? Believe it or not, it's not the pastors who ultimately build the excitement within a church; it's the people within the church who get excited because of what's being planned. When we fail to plan in advance we are greatly limiting the momentum that we could build within our congregation!
At the same time, when we take time to plan in advance, it gives us the opportunity to empower others to get involved. Procrastination is one of the greatest flaws of leadership. The longer something is put off, the more the responsibility falls on the leader. In my experience, there are often more creative people than the leader who could have done a much better job organizing and planning something if they had only been given the time and opportunity!
Leaders... we have to remember that our lack of planning impacts the development of the potential leaders around us.
Parents... we have to remember that our lack of planning impacts the development of our kids both relationally and spiritually.
Husbands/Wives... we have to remember that our lack of planning impacts the health of our marriage relationship.
Christians...we have to remember that our lack of planning greatly reduces the opportunities we'll have to make a difference in God's Kingdom.
God chose to plan far in advance for how He would redeem His creation. As Christians, we should not only be excited that God has chosen to involve us (the church) in these plans, but we should also be empowered by the Spirit of God to personally lead people towards Christ with overflowing love!
