I received an email on Monday from Lamar (the billboard company) with an apology. They apparently put a new billboard sign up on the wrong sign, and this wrong sign just happened to be our best billboard in South Knoxville. Whoa! I honestly didn't know how to react at first. My flesh wanted to get upset because we paid good money for that billboard, but I remained calm and had a great conversation with the Lamar rep.
After a couple conversations where I shared my expectations and he gave me some options from their end, Lamar made us a great deal. For the next two weeks, they are running our design on the digital board on Chapman Hwy to compensate for their mistake. I was just going to be happy with them moving us to another board in the same area, so this blew me away! If you live in South Knoxville, you probably know what board I'm talking about. It would cost us over $2000 to advertise on this board for two weeks, and we are basically getting it for the cost of one week on the smaller-sized billboards had they not made the mistake. We're basically getting it for free when you break it down!
I share this story with you so I can say this... Those unexpected circumstances that you may face today, tomorrow, next month, or next year, never catch God by surprise. Yes, your situation will probably be much more serious than a billboard mistake, but just know that what may seem like an interruption in your plans, no matter how great or small, may simply be the next great step in God's plans. Do I believe God works in all situations? You had better believe I do because the Bible says He does (Romans 8:28).
Do I think having The Overflow Church featured on this digital billboard is a top priority for God? Not exactly, but if there's something He can use to bring people back to Him, then I say He will make the most out of the situation. After all, this is all we can hope for... That God would allow us to be involved in what He's doing to lead people back towards Him. Little things like this billboard incident and other things like how He strategically places certain people in our paths throughout the week, completely leave me in awe of the God we serve and the opportunity we have to join Him in what He's doing!
