Tuesday Transformation

This week, I've been reading from two different books. One is called "unChristian," and it focuses on how people not of the Christian faith view those who are Christians. As I read this book, I'm saddened by the perception by which Christians are viewed, but at the same time, I'm frustrated because we have no one to blame but ourselves. Instead of loving people to a relationship with Jesus, we have spent most of our efforts simply trying to convert people to join our churches and adhere to our traditions. May God help us all see the difference.

These are all quotes from unChristian, written by David Kinnaman and Gabe Lyons

"Jesus saves his sharpest condemnation for self-righteous individuals, those who feel secure in their religious trappings."

In response to studies and research done by the Barna Group..."In virtually every study we conduct, representing thousands of interviews every year, born-again Christians fail to display much attitudinal or behavioral evidence of transformed lives."

"One crucial insight kept popping up in our exploration. In studying thousands of outsiders' impressions, it is clear that Christians are primarily perceived for what they stand against. We have become famous for what we oppose rather than who we are for."

The other book, "Outflow," seems to provide somewhat of a cure to the disconnect we have with those people who don't follow Christ. As our core group works through this book together, I'm excited to see how God will open our eyes to His plans for us. I don't think God ever intended for us to stand on the street corner with signs and yell at people. Nor do I think He intended for us to focus on "aggressive evangelism" tactics built around a program or specific steps. I think He expects us to allow His love to overflow from our lives as we live our lives. After all, this is the foundation of Matthew 28:19. The most accurate way to read this verse is..."As you are going." Sharing the love of Christ is supposed to be a way of life, not a program we do in addition to our church attendance. This is what our church, The Overflow, is all about. I'm pumped about the things God will show us over the next few weeks!

The bottom line is this: If God isn't first filling us up with His love and wisdom, we'll never effectively reach those who are not connected to Christ. Seeing lives changed requires us to look in the mirror first. We have to quit relying on our worship styles, preaching styles, and marketing strategies to reach those separated from God. When those of us who claim to follow Christ aren't even willing to follow Christ in our own lives, how can we expect anyone to take us serious?

God, transform us to your image, but let it be your true image and not the one we try to create for you!
