This past weekend, we took about half our launch team to Elevation Church in Charlotte, NC. While we hoped to gain some good ideas from the practical side of things, God had other plans. Yes, we learned a lot about how to do ministry and worship experiences, but even more important were the things we learned about having faith, loving God, and loving people! I hate the thought of trying to summarize the whole experience in a phrase or sentence, but just to give you a general perspective of what we learned, I'll say...
It doesn't matter what we do practically if it's not motivated and fueled by an unrelenting love and passion for God and other people!
God must become the center of everything we do. Yes, we say this all the time, but in His amazing power, I believe God really helped our team understand this truth through our experience at Elevation. Here are three things that were shared by people in our group that really stood out to me...
1) We can't allow "good" things to become "god" things.
Many of the things we spend time doing and pursuing are not necessarily evil. However, we often allow them to become small gods in our lives, and as a result, God doesn't get what He deserves from us.
2) Sacrifice isn't sacrifice until it cost you something.
It's easy to think we are sacrificing for God simply because we are part of a launch team or we give some money each week, but God showed us this weekend that we aren't sacrificing for God until we have sacrificed something we value from our life!
3) Other people need to know about what we are doing.
All the planning in the world will accomplish nothing if we don't take time to pass along to other people what God is doing in our lives! How dare we keep it to ourselves! As Peter says in Acts 4:20, "For we cannot stop speaking about what we have seen and heard."
